Our company has developed a novel UV sensor technology which alerts users once they have received a predefined dose of sunlight. The technology also has several additional application areas which we are currently pursuing. Why UV monitoring is important? Sunburn & Skin HealthIt's challenging to know how much time in the sun is too much. The strength of the suns radiation varies significantly between seasons and even within a day. An hour or two of exposure may be appropriate in winter where only 10-15 minutes on a summer's day may be enough for you to notice the effects of sunburn.Beyond the seasonal and daily variations, our location and skin type also dramatically impact the amount of time we can spend in the sun.For these reasons it is not surprising that sunburn is unfortunately common. In the US one study reported that over 50% of all adults were sunburnt in the preceding 12 months (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention). However in Australia, 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 5 teenagers are sunburnt on an average summer weekend (Volkov A, Dobbinson S, Wakefield M, Slevin T. Seven-year trends in sun protection and sunburn among Australian adolescents and adults. Aust N Z J Public Health 2013 Feb;37(1):63-9).Sunburn is painful but it is its connection with serious disease very concerning. Almost all skin cancers are the result of too much exposure to the suns UV radiation. According to the Cancer Council 99% of non-melanoma and 95% of melanoma are due to this type of exposure. Beyond the problem with sunburn, accelerated skin aging is also associated with too much time in the sun. One study published 2013 in the journal Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology involved 300 women and showed that 80% of skin aging is due to this single factor.Managing our UV exposure is critical for both our overall well being and our skin health.
