M-Shamba equips Kenyan rural youth with microlivestock ventures, in turn helping to address the UN-stated issues of food-waste, youth unemployment and an unsustainable agricultural sector. We are harnessing the capability of an insect called the Black Soldier Fly to break down organic matter into both a valuable fertiliser and, when fed as larvae to livestock, represent a sustainable, nutritious and affordable feed component to be purchased by farmers.M-Shamba stands for Mobile Farm in Swahili, because we produce modular farming units that can be easily delivered, operated and scaled up by young farmers regardless of literacy, access to land or capital. Once equipped with our M-Shamba units, we will regularly deliver farming inputs, consisting of eggs and organic waste, to our local partners. Our farmers will be trained by the leading insect research organisation, ICIPE, and in turn we will collect the larvae to be processed and sold as feed, as well as the fertiliser byproduct. We serve a crucial role in the local farming ecosystem, enabling market access for farmers and providing the necessary infrastructure to make scaling their businesses viable.
