Fund-raising - Morningside, Queensland, Australia
Raising awareness of pneumococcal disease and pneumococcal meningitis. In honour of my daughter, Mabel, who passed away suddenly on the 22nd of September, 2021 at just 6.5 months old. Mabel was fully vaccinated and we had no idea this was possible.I'm now trying to create a world in which she would have survived. I want all parents to be aware that the pneumococcal vaccines currently given to infants only contain 13 strains of pneumococcus - however there are approximately 100 strains that exist, and 40% of people carry this bacteria in their throats.Pneumococcal meningitis is sudden and can have incredibly devastating effects, therefore it is vital that it is diagnosed and treated quickly with antibiotics. The signs and symptoms of pneumococcal meningitis can be similar to gastroenteritis in infants - so it is important to ask "Is this meningitis?" I believe if we had known to ask this, this may have made the hospital clinicians more concerned, and Mabel would be here with us today.I am currently fundraising for the charities, Meningitis Centre Australia and Precious Wings, until the Mabel Olive Airi Foundation has charity status.
