Hospital & Health Care - , ,
Born in 2006, Madaktari Africa, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, began its mission to improve health care in Tanzania, Africa, through the training and education of local medical personnel. Madaktari's mission then is not just to improve health care, but to improve medical autonomy. We achieve this by investing knowledge and time, rather than dollars, into the Tanzanian healthcare infrastructure. For Madaktari participants, the primary goal is not simply to help the patients, but to help teach the medical staff so that improved patient care continues long after Madaktari has left. In addition, our volunteers use a "Train Forward" model with local medical staff, effectively teaching students to become the teachers, so that local doctors can be trained and then, in turn, teach others. As more doctors and nurses are trained, gaining more independence and becoming teachers themselves, a system of knowledge transfer begins to grow exponentially, creating a sustainable cycle of medical personnel growth that we believe can be a determining factor in ending Tanzania's dependency on foreign assistance. Madaktari began with this "Train Forward" model by teaching neurosurgery in Haydom, Tanzania. Additional programs in Cardiology and Nephrology have since been developed in other parts of the country, in cities such as Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Mbeya. Madaktari continues to grow its efforts and expand its reach, while striving to accomplish its mission of improved health care and medical autonomy.
