Madang Resort was formerly the Hotel Madang which is reputed to be the oldest hotel in PNG. During German colonial times the site of the Hotel Madang was a guest house which dates the hotel to be more than120 years old however, it has been burned and bombed during WW2 and then taken over by a number of colourful colonial characters including the Huxley and Gilmore families, then by dutch speculator Daddy Kool who at the time also owned the Bird of Paradise in Goroka. In 1976 it was acquired by the Barter family who immediately shut down all 7 public bars resulting in Bill Johns, Bruce Flynn rushing to Madang to prevent the closure of their most lucrative beer outlet in PNG! Following the closure of the public bars, Peter Barter, (later Sir Peter Barter) and his wife Janet, began the task of cleaning up the hotel, purchasing adjacent land and turning the hotel into a resort facing the beautiful Madang Harbour.Today the old Hotel Madang is now the Madang Resort one of the most iconic resorts in the Pacific Region. Whilst the Resort has 120 guest rooms with a further 20 under construction, the adjacent Kalibobo Village, also owned by the Barter family has a further 80 rooms, cottages, apartments catering for longer term guests and tenants - together offering more than 200 rooms. The Madang Resort offers excellent facilities that include 5 conference and meeting rooms, 2 restaurants, a function room, tennis court, 4 swimming pools, 2 lagoons, a PADI Dive Facility operating under the trading name of Niugini Dive Adventures.
