While working as an independent contractor assisting the land department of a large Oil & Gas company way back in 2012. It was brought to my attention by a lawyer friend that I could be held personally liable for making a mistake generating mineral ownership reports for the Oil & Gas companies land development department. I was new to the industry and ignorant of most legal issues that could personally effect me working as an independent contractor. I took the advice of the attorney friend, and headed down to Columbus, Ohio to file my newly formed business entity with the secretary of state. I then immediately informed the O&G company I'd been working for to draw up a new contract that replaced my name with the name of my newly formed company, because from that point forward I would be working under the the legal umbrella known as Madsen Energy Development, an Ohio Limited Liability Company which was filed and formed in July of 2012. Around that same time through out the Appalachian basin most O&G companies, and land firms began requiring all contractors both independent, and otherwise to perform work and be paid for services rendered under a business entity. Madsen Energy Development for the most part has been a one man show, but on several short lived occasions I have had the good fortune of taking on too much work, and have been able to hire on other independent contractors who I know and trust to help me shore up & complete any over-sized work load that I may have taken on. It gives me great pleasure to from time to time be able to employ certain people. Mostly old friends who helped to get me where I am today professionally within the Ohio Shale Development industry.
