Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre was established in 1991 to foster research in media technology that will support economic development in the Province of British Columbia. These goals are achieved through training of highly qualified personnel and transfer of knowledge and technology for media, graphics, visualization, human-computer interaction and communication technologies to the community.We also offer a Graduate Sub-Specialization in Human Computer Interaction MAGIC research extends across a range of disciplines. We have collaborated in projects involving biomedical imaging, cloud computing, robotics, scientific, engineering and financial visualization, installation and performance art, and interfaces for musical expression.The Centre highlights the commitment of UBC to the use of advanced media technology, and brings together existing efforts and new initiatives from various research programs. MAGIC serves as a catalyst to assimilate and exploit new technology in research and education at UBC and to strengthen interaction with industry through collaborative research.Our affiliates range across departments: Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Music, School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, Forestry, Psychology, Medicine, Education, Commerce, and Fine Arts. Some examples include multimedia, mobile computing, computer animation, 3-D modeling, interactive Web-based applications, hypermedia, computer music and computer-based tools for collaboration in education, medicine and entertainment.Projects affiliated with MAGIC have their own funding, although MAGIC provides shared facilities and personnel to assist in the start-up phases of projects and in the design and evaluation of research prototypes. MAGIC does not grant degrees directly, but does administer Specialization in Human Computer Interaction for Master students. Students earn degrees at all levels in existing programs, conducting research within MAGIC projects
