On 14 June 1896, Prof. Dhondo Keshav Karve started his work with the objectives of uplifting, emancipating and educating women who formed a major section of the socially downtrodden in Indian society. He was one of the first visionaries who realized that women can gain respect and emancipation only through modern education. At a remote village named Hingane near Pune, Maharshi Karve started educating four widows in a hut. The institution was then named as Anath Balikashram. The institution grew as the people became aware of the need of the cause. As the younger generation joined Maharshi Karve, he expanded the scope of the institute. It started working for all women and not just the widows. The institute provided shelter and education to the girls and women who wanted to learn. His view was simple. It is not wise to uphold the old as it is! Development is the New evolved from the Old… As a small seed grows into a huge banyan tree by branching out, the singular idea of liberating women through education has branched far and wide culminating in a huge educational institution. The institution, now known as "Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha"(MKSSS), still upholds his vision for women empowerment continuously coming up with new facilities and institutes for women to accommodate latest trends in educational and social sectors. Now it runs 62 different institutes catering to the needs of 29000 girls of all age groups at seven different campuses throughout Maharashtra. The institutes include pre-primary, primary, secondary as well as higher secondary schools, teachers training institutes, Vocational training and foreign languages training institutes, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, Mass Communication and Fashion designing schools as well as hostels for the students and working women. 700 girls are receiving partial or complete support from MKSSS for their education and living.
