Maiya School is a non-for-profit organisation run by two young Australian women that funds and operates schools for adolescent girls in refugee camps. Our goal is to give teenage girls living in displacement around the world the opportunity to learn, improving their own life and the lives of those around them. Maiya School aims to increase opportunities, raise self-confidence, and inspire a generation of girls living in refugee camps where female education is largely inaccessible. Our first project is in the Rohingya Kutupalong refugee camp, located near the coastal city of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. There is an extreme shortage of education centres for adolescent girls in these camps, with limited culturally appropriate schooling options for girls over the age of 10. We aim to change this by opening a girls-only learning centre, taking steps towards educating a generation of Rohingya girls living in displacement.
