Manufacturing Automation Laboratories (MAL) Inc. was founded in 1996 by Dr. Yusuf Altintas, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of Manufacturing Automation Laboratory at the University of British Columbia. His laboratory disseminates their research algorithms and knowledge to the machining industry worldwide. In our view, the area of machine tools, metal cutting, computer numerically controlled (CNC), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and sensor-assisted intelligent machining are quite wide; each require both academic and engineering experience to understand. Manufacturing operations use all these areas in an integrated fashion, therefore understanding how these areas work interdependently is crucial. In terms of metal cutting, which is one of the most widely used manufacturing processes to produce the final shape of products, technology continues to advance. This is all done in parallel with development in materials, computers and sensors. A blank is converted into a final product by cutting extra material away with turning, drilling, milling, broaching, boring and grinding operations conducted on CNC machine tools. The result of MAL UBC is embedded in several machining software products. These products feature advanced machining process simulation software, open CNC machine tool & robot control software and sensor based machining process control & monitoring programs.
