Independent author with a mission of increasing awareness about spiritual development. Spiritual awakening is about way more than accessing transcendent realities ("the woo-woo stuff.") If not arrived at through a specific set of steps - including a rational one of critically analyzing conventional wisdom and traditional religious teachings - spirituality can drive one into some misleading, reality-avoiding, and even dangerous paths. Also a spiritual awakening, or spiritual maturation will engender some very specific traits in the person - increased compassion, acceptance, gratitude, forgiveness, humility - and most of all total and radical inclusiveness. If our belief system, or our spiritual practices are not leading us in those directions, we should be questioning whether they are actually of any benefit - to us or to the universe in general. My award-winning book, Faith Beyond Belief: Stories of Good People Who Left Their Church Behind (Quest Books, 2012, is my first attempt at introducing this message from the angle at which I see it.*Plenty of others have written about spiritual development, spiritual awakening, but they seem to always miss the logic that would bring it all together - fail to draw in the average person in society. You know, the one who goes to church because he feels its the right thing to do, but isn't really all that invested in religious belief - or the one who struggled his way out of religious circles because the beliefs didn't make sense.
