Marie Bellemare Consulting assists architects and engineers assess their designs with the aim to reduce any potential environmental impacts and improve on their sustainable development goals.Constantly, architects and engineers specify material selection during construction projects. Their decisions affect the environment, the communities and, in some cases, even the public health. Therefore, it is essential to know in an objective, credible, and rigorous way the impact of material selection in any project type.In this sense, there are methodologies that help determine and assess the best product alternatives during the design of construction projects. One of them is the Life Cycle Analysis or LCA, according to ISO 14040-44 standard, which is a meticulous evaluation pertaining to potential environmental impacts of products, services, processes and/or the organization. The fundamental objective is to determine and compare products to identify the one with the least possible environmental impact throughout its life cycle. This analysis takes into account extraction of raw materials necessary for the manufacture all the way to its end-of-life treatment (e.g., discharge, recycling, etc.), and anything in between, such as maintenance and transport. In order to obtain credits for green building assessment and certification programs, the LCA is often required. The different applications of LCA for geen building assessment and certification programs are:•LEED®•Zero Carbon Building Standard•Green Globe•Environmental Building Declaration (EBD) with the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute.
