Our oceans and their health are vital for human survival. Yet many ocean ecosystems are on the verge of irreversible collapse and many fish and mammal species face extinction. Overfishing, bycatch, pollution and global warming are the biggest threats that our oceans currently face, resulting in a rapid decline of ocean health and resources. In 2018, only 13% of our oceans' marine ecosystems were found to be healthy and undamaged (according to the Global Citizen). The good news is there is a growing movement seeking to change this landscape. Most recently, as a result of COP26, multiple national and international efforts have been launched with the aim of connecting and better protecting MPAs - and Marinas Guardian can play a pivotal role in achieving these goals. We want to protect our oceans from the cataclysmic and cruel effects of illegal and irresponsible fishing practices, which often remain unreported and unregulated - including the horrifying issues of bycatch and ghost nets.To do this we will develop autonomous, cost efficient and operationally effective solutions to patrol global Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) while simultaneously identifying and removing ghost nets. Our project is in alignment with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and also forms part of the response to the growing movement to protect our oceans, confirmed most recently by world leaders at COP26 in Glasgow, UK.Marinas Guardian's primary purpose is to aid in the protection and preservation of MPAs, restoring pristine underwater ecosystems by restricting human activity and allowing space for the safe passage of migrating marine species. However, MPAs need protecting and monitoring. That's where we and our MG Orcas come in.We can play a key part in this vital work through the launch of the 'MG Orcas' - artificially intelligent, autonomous vessels to be used in the patrolling and surveillance of MPAs whilst simultaneously identifying, tagging and removing destructive ghost nets
