Pandemic led new segments of consumers from smaller cities and different economic background to shopping online - especially for daily essentials. Our experience running a store that offered an app and online delivery in a tier 2 city in India (Mysore) showed, this growth was not limited to younger population but also with older population who are new to ordering online. However, our research in Tier 2, 3 and 4 cities showed the incumbents in eCommerce grocery delivery are largely unsuccessful in capturing market share due to deficiencies in their business model.Our research and data from running an online store show, consumers in small cities (Tier 2, 3 & 4) prefer regional brand/unbranded for grocery and quick delivery (<30 min).
