Fund-raising - Naas, Kildare, Ireland
The Galway Cycle is an annual charity cycle, run by students at Maynooth University since 1987, from the college to Galway and back again. In that time it has raised over €1.5 million for a variety of good causes. The fundraising focus is on children's charities based in Ireland. In its time, the organisation, which operates a full training schedule for participants, has introduced thousands of people of cycling. The mission statement is 'Cycling, Charity and Craic, since 1987'. Planning for the event starts in November of every year, and various fundraising events and weekend training cycles lead up to the cycle weekend itself, which takes place at the end of March or early April. The event attracts both current students and alumni, and this is represented in the organising committee.Charities who have benefited from the Galway Cycle include Down Syndrome Ireland, Headstrong, Pieta House, Irish Guide Dogs, PWSAI, Jack and Jill Children's Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland.
