Performing Arts - Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
MCS Chorus, founded in 1975, is unique among performing arts groups in Mississauga in that it is the city's only chamber choir committed to classical repertoire. Mervin Fick was engaged as Artistic Director in 2009, bringing with him fresh vision and inspiring renewal and artistic growth. His innovative programming, commitment to community outreach, and audience education, were instrumental in renewing MCS Chorus' artistic vision to evolve from a large (80 voice) oratorio society to its current musical ensemble as a chamber choir of 35-40 auditioned singers. MCS Chorus' diverse season includes extensive community engagement events, multi-generational musical education programming and ticketed concerts. MCS' transition to chamber choir was a pivotal strategic move to facilitate performances in various and smaller locations, bringing the intimate experience of live music to a broad range of diverse audiences.Mervin's commitment to a ‘culture of education' is vital to the organization's growth and success within the community, as well as outside Mississauga. Mervin developed and delivers an innovative interactive arts education program, based on James Wright's ‘Gallery of Song: Spirit of the Land', to elementary students in the Peel District School Board. The program is an integral part of the organization's artistic vision, inspiring cultural education and lifelong learning.MCS Chorus strives to be Mississauga's premiere chamber choir, dedicated to promoting the appreciation of classical choral music, and continues to be a thriving, vibrant and integral member of the artistic community within the city of Mississauga.
