MeasureY is building staffing optimization software to align emergency department staffing to demand using machine learning and optimization models. Emergency Departments (EDs) are the safety net of the medical system. As a result, patient volume in the ED is subject to large variations, making it difficult to adequately staff to demand. Our solution consists of 1) a forecaster, 2) an optimizer, and 3) an analyzer. The forecaster forecasts patient demand and variability at multiple time horizons and accounts for various severity levels. The result of the forecaster feeds into an optimizer which also accounts for user-set preferences (i.e. allowable shift durations, the total number of hours available, physician/physician ratio, nurse/physician ratio, etc) and generates new or modified staffing templates. The result of the optimizer feeds into an interactive analyzer to help ED leadership estimate the effects of staffing changes on their KPIs, and ultimately choose the staffing template they feel is best. By improving staff alignment, we can help EDs increase operational efficiency, reduce staff burnout, improve quality of care, and optimize financial outcomes.
