Medway is on an exciting journey bidding to be UK City of Culture in 2025. Our bid is being shaped by people across Medway's towns, villages and peninsula and we invite everyone of all ages and backgrounds to get involved.Run by central government (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) every four years, the competition is designed to give places the opportunity to reposition themselves through creativity, art and culture. Previous UK cities of culture are Derry-Londonderry (2013), Hull (2017) and Coventry (2021). Winning would see Medway mount a year-long, world-class creative programme taking place across the whole geography of Medway, and turning our green spaces, highstreets, stadiums and shopping centres into galleries and theatres, showcasing local, regional and UK creative talent and putting Medway on the national map. Hosting in 2025 can be expected to accelerate regeneration, bring major social and cultural benefits, inspire the whole population to engage with culture and heritage and create a lasting legacy of increased visitor numbers and a more vibrant, ambitious and sustainable cultural sector as well as new local and national partnerships. In particular, we expect Medway 2025 to create new cultural sector and tourism jobs, deliver opportunities, skills and employability for young people, feed into wellbeing and social isolation agendas and increased visitor numbers.Bidding provides a key milestone in Medway Cultural Partnership's new 2020-2030 Cultural Strategy and plays a key role in helping Medway Place Board tell Medway's story. Medway's bid is supported by Medway Place Board, our four local universities, Mid Kent College, Medway Council and significant numbers of local businesses, charities and community groups.
