Melanoma is now the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with 1 in 53 people diagnosed during their lifetime.It is the most rapidly-increasing type of cancer, with almost 16,000 new diagnoses and some 2,600 deaths every year.Increasingly it is a disease that affects the young, with 10% of newly-diagnosed cases occurring in people aged between 15 and 24.Yet we know that 86% of cases could be avoided. Awareness, prevention and early detection enabling prompt treatment are essential in combating this increasingly common disease.
