Memory Care Café is nonprofit project of Community initiatives, located in San Francisco. \\Founded in 2013, Memory Care Café organizes weekly outings and activities for people with ‘Forgetfulness' (Early-stage Alzheimer's/dementia) who participate with their care partners. From its inception, Memory Care Café has fostered social connections for people who are at risk of becoming isolated, because of age related cognitive changes. \- We support both care partners\The focus is on people who live at home with their spouses, family members or hired caregivers, but seniors in care communities are also welcome. The founders believe that both care partners benefit equally from participating in an accepting social group, with opportunities to share experiences without the fear of stigma. \- We talk about 'Forgetfulness'\"Forgetfulness" is an inclusive term and a gentle alternative to Alzheimer's disease, dementia or cognitive impairment. It generates less stigma and fear. After all, everyone has experienced moments of forgetfulness. Brain areas necessary for making new memories, communicating, controlling behavior, and navigating in the world are often compromised in people with progressive Forgetfulness.\- We offer 'Light Respite'\While respite means time spent apart, light respite allows both care partners a break from\daily routine, in an environment that welcomes them together. The social nature of this type\of respite cultivates a level of trust and connection, that allows care partners to experience\some relief through social connection, activities, relaxation and a little independence.\- We look at the upside of life\Whereas traditional support groups are offer (emotional) support, resources and referrals necessary for the changing lifestyles of people with memory loss, Memory Care Café is mainly a social group.
