Hospitality - Swansea, Tasmania, Australia
Heritage Listed Meredith House and Mews provides bed and breakfast accommodation in the historic town of Swansea on the East coast of Tasmania. Its elevated position offers spectacular views across Great Oyster Bay to the Freycinet Peninsula. The property has 11 guest rooms and is able to accommodate up to 32 people at any one time. 7 of the rooms are in the main house, one being a two-room suite on the ground floor with the remainder being on the first floor. Alongside the main house are four Mews-style studio apartments which were added in 1997. All of our rooms have en-suite bathrooms. Surrounding the property is an acre of landscaped garden with lawns, a barbecue area and many fruit trees and shrubs. The house was built as Laughton House in 1853 and functioned as a family home for the first 50 years or so; in 1910 it opened as The Canberra Guest House quickly becoming a well-known holiday destination. In 1987 a noted craftsman, Bill Tinning, purchased and painstakingly renovated the property to its former glory, it was renamed Meredith House after colonial artist and poet Louisa Anne Meredith, whose husband, Charles, originally owned the land on which the house was built. Meredith House is now hosted by its current owners Neal McDermott and Noel Stanley, who arrived in April 2004 and are intent on further restoration ensuring that the house retains its character and dignity, without sacrificing comfort & modern necessities, or turning the house into a living museum. We aim to offer a high quality service with personal touches.
