Nonprofit Organization Management - Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Merlion Club is a community social club of Singaporeans and ex Singaporeans, PRs residing in Melbourne, Australia. We connect all Singaporeans and Friends. The Merlion Club started with 11 founding members in June 1990. It was formed to foster fellowship and business networking among Singaporeans/former Singaporeans and their families in Australia and friends of Singapore. The emblem chosen depicts the "Merlion", a half lion, half-mermaid figure that dates back hundreds of years in Singapore culture and history to the naming of the island. The merlion is a symbol easily recognized by everyone connected with Singapore as a true Singaporean emblem. The words "Melbourne, Australia" show the domicile of the club and its members. It is a multicultural club with a healthy mix of the racial blend and traditions, which makes Singapore an Asian melting pot with a culture worth preserving. Today the club has more than 200 members, many of whom have been members for as long as the club has been in existence. Many new members are joining the club, from the large population of young residents, either former students of Australian universities or new migrants to Melbourne. Since its set-up, the Merlion Club has come a long way. We now have our very own Merlion Club's web site. Although technology has changed, the spirit and objectives of the Merlion Club remain true to those set out by the 11 founding members 17 years ago.
