Mestizo Arts & Activism Collective Details
The Mestizo Arts and Activism Collective (MAA) is a university-community partnership located in the Westside of Salt Lake City, Utah. We seek to develop community-engaged leaders and scholars by providing a space for high school students to strengthen their leadership, develop community-based research skills, and create community-based research projects that address issues that matter to them. We seek to create a safe environment for high school-age students to discuss issues that are relevant to their age-group, issues impacting them, their families, friends and their communities on a daily basis (e.g. education, stereotypes, immigration, bullying, etc.). Drawing from critical ways of teaching and learning we begin to unpack these issues and respond to by creating projects that address their community concerns (e.g. websites, documentaries, newspapers articles, murals, music, dance, etc.).Our goal is to make a difference and make the world a better place for everyone to live in through developing young leaders, creating unity within our community, informing the world about problems young people of color face and finding creative ways to solve them.
