The Michigan Investment Group (MIG) is a student-managed organization focused on investments at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. MIG was founded with the purpose of helping both business and non-business students, who have an interest in markets and the world of finance. Our group is divided into two main groups that work together: an investment group and a programming group. The investment group works on maintaining and managing our portfolio. This group mainly discusses the markets and attempts to make sound investments based on stocks' fundamentals, aimed at those with weaker programming skills. Our programming group is currently working on finding ways in which algorithms and programs can help make better investment decisions. Although this is a very competitive and difficult landscape, MIG's main goal is to help its members gain a better understanding of the field. Among the projects we have undertaken is a program that notifies an investor when certain metrics for a followed stock are met. Another project is a high frequency trading (HFT) algorithm that tries to take advantage of sudden and abrupt price changes in equities. Unfortunately, our HFT algorithm will only be tested and used on historical data, given the regulations surrounding the industry.
