The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) was set up in June 2007, with the support of the IEE Programme and a wide array of public institutions, Ministries and local councils. MIEMA has an outstanding experience in the field of European cooperation projects in energy efficiency and renewable energy. In line with the aims of other IEE supported Energy Agencies, MIEMA promotes awareness initiatives and training on energy management and planning and contributes to define incisive policies of intervention. MIEMA's main activities include: - Sustainable Energy (and Climate) Action Plan for Maltese localities- Building energy audits and energy monitoring- Eco-Urbanism and energy saving in spatial planning - Research targeting the reduction of energy needs of industrial and touristic sector - Promotion of the use of bio fuels and other clean energy sources - Sustainable Urban Mobility planning- Dissemination on renewable energy at local and national levels- Awareness campaigns on energy saving behaviors in households- Training activities on energy and sustainability in buildingsOver the past ten years, MIEMA has implemented more than 20 European projects, all related to sustainable energy and green industry, under a range of different EU Programmes. Its engineers have conducted numerous energy audits and provided consultancy and advice on clean energy issues to local councils and other public entities. MIEMA supported four Maltese Local Councils to achieve the awards of the European Energy Award through MEDEEA project.Another project in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy (Elihmed) included the installation of PV systems and energy efficiency measures in 35 low-income households. MIEMA has also recently concluded an Horizon 2020 ( Empower) that implemented a pilot on smart energy grid in the island of Gozo. The agency has successfully developed and implemented energy training courses through different projects and EU Programmes (CRIM-SAFRI, BUS-Trainers, SEOP, EHCmap, Eneplan, Eresplan). At present, MIEMA has ongoing projects funded through the Interreg Europe, Interreg MED, Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ programmes.
