As our aging population increases, we will have to take on an ever increasing burden of managing chronic conditions. The elderly carry higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, and other ailments, and it is the healthcare systems and caregivers who work with treatment and management of these diseases. In the US, 80% of the aged population suffers from at least one chronic condition, and 68% of seniors suffer from two or more chronic conditions, which require regular health check-ups every 3-4 months. Due to the highly infectious COVID-19 virus, many caregivers are unable to provide care or reach people who need care. Many clinical appointments have been canceled, and unmanaged chronic diseases also increase the susceptibility of life-threatening complications from COVID-19 infections. Our app, miia (Medical Intelligence Applied), is a solution to connect caregivers and elderly during the COVID-19 crisis, and is designed to be accessible and usable by most seniors. Miia is an application that will help track and manage health conditions for the elderly population and connect the isolated and vulnerable people to caregivers. For instance, we implemented a Chatbot to help seniors input their vital signs. The chatbot can be made to speak aloud while the senior can utilize their voice, which is converted to text. The chatbot can also ask questions to monitor symptoms and mood to screen for infection or depression, respectively. Furthermore, our app will track the mobility and activity functions of our users through drawing data from the built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, and other smartphone sensors. This will help us predict activity level and potentially prevent frailty and traumatic falls with seniors.
