Days increasingly spent with constant distractions and interruptions, on a constant flow of emails, messages, calls, meetings and deadlines, where our working experience happens in constant multitasking mode, and with high stress levels, have become ubiquitous. This seems to be the new norm in our workplace, even though it carries high costs in terms of productivity and wellbeing. But… does it have to be this way? Google, Apple, Nike, McKinsey, Deutsche Bank, Harvard Business School and the US Marines are only a few of the organizations that are currently exploring in their cultures, new strategies for attention management. Simply put, these practices (commonly referred to by the word mindfulness), begin with simple attention training exercises that allow us to first direct – and then sustain – our attention on any given object, whether writing an email, reading something (has your attention wandered today, while reading a text like this?), or even a conversation, either at the office or at home. Despite the fact that many of these practices were originally developed in the context of some of the oldest Eastern contemplative traditions, over the last few years a growing number of neuroscientific research studies has validated many of the benefits originally associated with these practices, therefore creating a business case for their introduction in organizational settings. The ≡ Mind Revolution ≡ projects aims to be part of the global dialogue that has been taking place between long term contemplative practitioners, and western scientists, with the aim of gathering knowledge from these two streams of wisdom. With such participation, we hope to develop the capacity to translate this knowledge into a corporate setting, with the goal to increase, and sustain over time, high levels of productivity and wellbeing.
