Nonprofit Organization Management - Kansas City, Missouri, United States
While leaving a church service in 2011, an 8 year old boy in Connecticut named Ky Smith noticed a food truck with a long line of homeless people waiting to be served. He then asked his aunt if he could serve them food as well. His aunt purchased a few boxes of donuts right then and there and allowed Ky to personally pass the donuts out to the people in the line as she watched. When Ky returned to her car, he asked if they could pass out items every Sunday. His aunt let him know that she was willing to help as long as he did the majority of the work. Ky accepted the challenge and on that day, Muscles's Mission was born. They wanted to create a kid owned and operated organization that benefited their immediate and eventually, global community. After some time, Ky was able to get other children within the community to join his efforts. These first participants ranged in age from just a few months old to early teens. The children provided food, treats and hygiene supplies to the homeless by purchasing items with only their allowances or donations and working hard to pack the meals and treats themselves. Ky's aunt moved to Missouri and many of the original Muscles's Mission participants moved to Ohio, this halted the organization's activities for a while. In 2017, with Ky's blessing, his aunt picked the Muscles's Mission torch back up and renamed the organization, Mini Missions. Her vision was not to only focus on the homeless population, but the community as a whole. The "Minis", as the mission's participants are called, spend time at senior communities, help the homeless, volunteer within their community and practice being leaders among their peers. It is the organization's belief that even the smallest person can make a BIG difference.
