The Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary (hereinafter referred to as: the Survey) was established on 1st July 2017 by the merger of the Hungarian Office for Mining and Geology and the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary based on the Governmental decision No. 1009/2017 as well as the Governmental decree No. 161/2017. The Survey is a central governmental body with separate functions and competence acting jointly with Governmental Offices of Baranya, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Pest and Veszprém counties (with the Department for Mining as well as the Mining Divisions of Departments for Technical Permitting and Consumer Protection) in performing all state activities related to mining and geology. The Survey is supervised by the minister of National Development responsible for mining affairs. The newly established organisation will be a modern, client-oriented survey relying on the well established traditions on mining administration and geological – geophysical surveys, as well as possessing all knowledge and skills in order to meet the needs of the 21st century. The Survey is about to ensure balance, competitiveness and sustainability in its special field, foster the security of supply as well as manage natural resources in accordance with the state interests and needs of the society. The scientific research is also a very important part of the activities of the Survey in the field of geology, geophysics, mining and climate policy.
