Civic & Social Organization - , England, United Kingdom
We enable adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties - our 'Members‘, to transform their lives through Social Therapeutic Horticulture (STH).We support 37 members across ages of 20-70. We do this 5 days per week, 51 weeks per year, equating to 30,000 hours of support annually. We have 11 dedicated staff and 20 volunteers, many of whom have RHS level qualifications. Our Members, staff and volunteers work together as a team, having fun and learning about horticulture. Together, we provide horticultural services, planting and maintaining a 10-acre site for Missenden Abbey (our home), growing fruit and vegetables for their kitchens. We also support our local parish council, village association, community library and older people's care home to improve their surroundings through horticultural improvement and maintenance work.STH activities are interwoven within our work and cover:• Lawn and Herbaceous maintenance using mechanical and non-mechanical machinery• Plants and Produce – design, propagation, management and selling• Floristry – production of cut flowers and seasonal arrangements for sale and interaction with the community (to promote socialisation and make available light-touch numeracy and retail skills)• General horticultural management (weeding, watering, composting)• Construction work – trellis, raised beds, fruit cages, gabions, • Woodwork - bat, hedgehog and bird boxes• Engagement with nature – walks, appreciation of trees, wildlife• BeekeepingWe also:• Provide art, crafts, music and sports activities• Work with young people, hosting mainstream school students to achieve their National Citizenship Scheme awards
