MBS is developing a completely new wearable metabolism monitoring device that provides continuous real time measurements of an individual's caloric expenditure. Currently, two types of devices are mostly used for measuring caloric burn rate (Caloric Expenditure, 'CE').One type, popular with fitness-minded consumers, uses wearable commercial devices based on measuring movement with a pedometer or accelerometer-based device (e.g. Fitbit). CE measurements are based on population approximations. Increasingly, these devices are also being used in medical studies. Although easy and convenient to use they are notoriously inaccurate.The other approach to determine CE is using Indirect Calorimetry (IC), which measures the levels of CO2 or O2 in expired breath. Measurements are collected for limited (30-60 min) time periods while the subject is resting or exercising. However, IC has several disadvantages. This includes the inability to collect continuous readings, the need for maintaining an airtight facemask, lack of portability, limited number of readings, and cost. Therefore IC is impractical to use in an everyday environment.The MBS device provides several advantages over movement based wearable activity monitors and Indirect Calorimetry. The MBS caloric expenditure measurement includes all forms (basal metabolism, thermogenic, and physical activity). MBS measurements are directly linked to individuals metabolism not population approximations. The MBS device is also wearable and can take measurements continuously and non-intrusively. As a result, the MBS device is capable of measuring an individual's true daily CE rate, minute by minute.
