The National Highway Safety Act of 1966 provides for a coordinated national highway safety program through financial assistance to the states to accelerate highway traffic safety programs. The Act charges the governor of each state with the responsibility of administering a highway safety program designed to reduce death, injury and property damage caused by traffic crashes.\\In Mississippi, the Governor has designated the executive director of the Division of Public Safety Planning as his representative for highway safety. The Governor's Office of Highway Safety (OHS) is one of four offices under the Division of Public Safety Planning which is a subdivision of the Department of Public Safety. The OHS is responsible for administering the federal highway safety grant programs. Also, the OHS serves as a valuable resource to the Mississippi Legislature on highway safety issues and serves in a coordinating role in various highway safety-related initiatives.
