Mitsui Fine Arts inc. shows you the way to build your art collection or find you a single art object to cherish. We source and sell Japanese art, and design, primarily from Kyoto. When we offer those delightful works, we also introduce the stories and culture behind them. The company has roots going back to two centuries in Kyoto through its proprietor, Misako Mitsui, and our core principle is based on Toriawase* esthetic. The time feels right for Mitsui Fine Arts inc. to connect a new audience with the Japanese artworks that Misako has been pursuing all her life. Today, we sense a highly sophisticated appetite for excellent works of art and design attuned with the high culture of old and recent Kyoto -- and a desire to enjoy them comfortably in our contemporary life in the Bay Area, California.* Toriawase is a centuries-old way of enjoying artworks rooted in the culture of the Way of Tea (chanoyu 茶の湯). It refers to the careful selection of all the tea utensils, scrolls, flower arrangements and so on, needed for one specific tea event, or tea ceremony, according to a chosen theme. The object of Toriawase is to bring harmony between these various elements. It means carefully paying attention to the calls and responses exchanged by the objects of art, design and craft chosen. It is different from any scholarly interpretation of these works, such as school, era, genre, style, or shape and color. To create harmony between the different elements that compose a tea event is part of the essence and joy of "way of tea." It takes mastery to orchestrate and achieve this level of harmony. Misako has been trained in the principle since she was a little girl. It became her second nature and Toriawase lies at the core of her relationship with artworks and Mitsui Fine Arts inc.'s approach to guiding building a collection.
