Agriculture has for a number of years been the backbone of most African economies. In most African countries, agriculture is the most dominant economic activity and employs a large number of the workforce directly or indirectly. South Africa alone has an estimated 1.4 million smallholder farmers who are responsible for producing 80% of the food consumed in the country. These small farmers face numerous challenges but the biggest being that of adverse weather. Once a drought hits, a smallholder farmer is affected the most and protected the least from such an event. These farmers end up using their meagre savings to buy stock feed for their animals and to feed their families. With dying crops in the field they end up resorting to slaughtering productive animals at lower prices (not to mention the number of livestock dying of hunger). This ought not be so. Mobbisurance exists to give these smallholder farmers access to affordable crop insurance and prevent their further slide into the poverty trap. By using satellite imagery and other tools at our disposal, we are able to give the farmers a financial safety net for non-rainy days.
