The Model ECOWAS Summit (MES) is a gathering of the Youth on Diplomacy. It follows the format of an ECOWAS Heads of State gathering, and role plays or simulates what ECOWAS does. It is a high level research based program in which participants represent one or more West African countries from many points of view depending on a given issue for the Summit. Each participant will write a position paper to reflect his country's positions and will argue or debate on that Position. Participants here take on roles as Diplomats of their respective countries, acting as Head of State, Vice Presidents, Speakers of Parliaments (Speakers of Delegation) leading their delegations. The Model ECOWAS Summit (MES) which started in 2014 is a simulation activity in which participants obtain skills such as diplomacy, teamwork, leadership, public speaking and debating on issues at the highest level of regional decision making. Also, as an event of its kind, the Model ECOWAS Summit aims at promoting youth empowerment and development, youth participation in governance, community development, peace and human rights particularly in West Africa.Furthermore, this initiative is also aimed at enhancing the policy of transforming ECOWAS from ‘'ECOWAS of States to ‘' ECOWAS of People" by creating an avenue that enables the youth to gain an understanding of the workings of ECOWAS, its role in regional economic integration and development, established organs, institutions and agencies in order to foster greater participation, networking and engagement with ECOWAS at all levels of policy formulation and implementation.
