Mission Statement Mortar Theatre Company is a nonprofit organization that uses theatre to solidify links in society. Like mortar holding bricks together, stories bind individuals into community. Our theatre celebrates unsung heroes alongside well-known tales to show our common connections as human beings. 2010 Season: Inherit the Whole by Dana Lynn Formby Inherit the Whole is the story of a Vietnam vet who has given up on the world in order to create peace for himself in the house his parents left him. His family pays a visit, looking for a rumored trunk of gold their dad buried under the house nearly thirty years ago. To prove the gold doesn't exist, he joins his family in ripping through the floorboards of his own house. As he digs deeper into the ground, he finds a glimmer of hope causing him to give up on the peace he almost found. Under America by Jacob Juntunen Under America is an epic ensemble piece that explores various characters' connections to gentrification, public housing, and the prison industry. The plot primarily focuses on Sam, a lesbian journalist who lives in Chicago's upscale Gold Coast, and Michael, a seventeen-year old African American who resides just down Division Street from Sam in the infamous Cabrini Green complex. After deciding to pursue a story concerning Chicago's public housing crisis, Sam becomes involved both in Michael's world and his mounting legal problems. Through this, the lives of Sam, Michael, and their loved ones become intractably intertwined.
