Hospital/Clinic - Paw Paw, WV, US
Mountaineer Community Health Center, Inc. was established in Paw Paw, West Virginia in early 1996 by a group of interested citizens who were concerned about access to care due to financial barriers and the considerable travel time necessary to seek routine health services in this isolated, rural area. The group established as its mission the provision of comprehensive and preventive health care services to the underserved residents of Morgan and Hampshire Counties, regardless of their ability to pay. A community governing board was established in May 1996 and assumed full fiduciary responsibility for the operation of Mountaineer Community Health Center. By October 1996, we were a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike.Located in the Appalachian Region of the United States, Mountaineer Community Health Center serves the isolated, sparsely populated rural areas of Morgan and Hampshire Counties, as well as portions of adjacent counties, in West Virginia's eastern panhandle. Morgan and Hampshire Counties are both medically underserved areas and health professional shortage areas for primary care. As such, health care options for the target population are limited. Furthermore, with a narrow, winding road network and frequent snow and ice, travel is frequently treacherous or impassible. Our location reduces the impact of geographic isolation and increases access to care.Through the efforts of a community-wide initiative, our current health center facility was built in 2004 on land donated by a local resident. This replaced a small leased cottage with adjoining trailer. The facility is sufficient to accommodate two providers, with four examination rooms, a trauma room outfitted for minor surgeries, a nursing station, laboratory, treatment room, supply storage, and administrative space.
