Public Policy - New York, New York, United States
We are a group of Staten Island residents who are committed to working in a collaborative way to address social justice issues and policies at home through grassroots organizing, policy and legislative actions, and civic and issue based educational activities. Move Forward Staten Island was founded the day after the 2016 elections by local attorney, Julienne Verdi. Move Forward Staten Island's first public action was to organize a group of Staten Islanders to attend the 2017 Women's March in New York City in January 2017. Since then, Move Forward Staten Island has held public trainings and issue-based forums on topics ranging from allyship, to Community Boards, climate change, and the Constitutional Convention. MFSI was also one of the lead organizers of the Staten Island People's Climate March which was one of the largest mass demonstrations in Staten Island's history. Move Forward Staten Island has organized and participated in demonstrations in support of the Affordable Care Act, HALT Solitary Confinement Act and Climate and Community Protection Act and has delivered hundreds of signatures on key legislation to legislators on the state and federal level and have generated countless calls to legislators in support or against legislation. In addition to these activities, Move Forward Staten Island has organized community-based fundraisers to support other local non-profit organizations including; Planned Parenthood of New York City, La Colmena and El Centro del Inmigrante.
