A septic tank system is an underground watertight container, mostly constructed with concrete. It is meant to receive sewage and retain liquid sludge for approximately 24 hours. The system consists of two main components: The first compartment of the tank is where the waste water enters, letting the solid matter to settle down to the bottom and the scum to float. The tank has three basic functions: First, it serves as a settling chamber. Second, the tank acts as a digestion chamber, allowing biological treatment of waste. Third, the tank becomes a storage vault for the solid waste, until it is removed. The tile absorption field (nitrification field) is the second and perhaps the most vital part of your septic tank system. It comprises of trenches with gravel and jointed tile. Crushed stone and perforated pipe are also used in place of gravel and jointed tile. Once the treatment is over, the liquid sewage is received in the septic tank. This liquid is then dispersed into the soil for further absorption and the final biological treatment.
