Government Administration - Belgrade, , Serbia
THE TOWN ITSELF: Sopot is a suburban, green safe heaven in metropolitan Belgrade, towered above by the densely forested Kosmaj mountain (626m) and Kosmaj Memorial (featured in the MoMa "Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia" Exhibition). Next door to downtown Belgrade, Orašac, Topola or Smederevo, Sopot is not just close to the abundance of history, high tech, top schools, and culture the Belgrade metropolitan area offers, but it's its key suburban getaway. Vuk Karadžić recorded that the first free Belgrade court in 1827 was established in Sopot with only a smaller branch office in Belgrade, as it was "more convenient and closer to come to Sopot". The town is still known today for its convenient distance for many Belgradians and others keen on a high quality city break. Sopot is regarded for its thriving restaurant (Serb. kafana) scene, ancient landmarks and monasteries, appreciation for arts and motions pictures, great spots for hiking and cycling coupled with abundant picnic areas. It is a must-see according to Lonely Planet, Tripadvisor and many others!MUNICIPALITY GOVERNMENT: President Živorad Milosavljević, his Deputy and the Municipality Assembly govern the Municipality of Sopot, which the daily Blic called "Tito from Sopot", who has been the longest president and government in office, for more than 30 consecutive years, in Serbia's modern election history. Numerous national awards and recognition have been bestowed upon Sopot. The Municipality has been the founder and custodian of SOFEST, one of the oldest continuously running film festivals in the Balkans (for more details: www.sofest.rs).Municipality of Sopot on Facebook: www.facebook.com/opstina.sopot/
