Muse/A (myoo-zay) is a journal of visual art, poetry, and lyric essay founded by Gregg Murray in 2015. Between 2016 and 2019 he served as Editor-in-Chief, adding a small but essential editorial staff. From the beginning the goal of Muse/A was to provide a beautiful and sacred space for visual art and poetry to exist side-by-side. The lyric essay was not part of the original plan, but conversations between Murray and eventual Lyric Essays Editor Anya Chambers led to its inclusion. They began to emphasize a commitment to emerging writers, especially marginalized voices and styles.Muse/A is a play on musée, the French word for museum. As a journal that features visual art, this connotation makes sense. But the name also is an inversion of Amuse, indicating that it exists for amusement. A third meaning is that it inspires, just as the ancient muses inspired the Greeks. Secretly, the name had a fourth meaning, as it was inspired by the Radiohead album Kid A. The backslash, used in poetry to indicate a new line, became essential to the brand. The favicon was simply /A, and the journal used it as a garnish throughout their website and communiqués.The journal is currently on extended hiatus.
