Museum de Fundatie exhibits a large collection of old, modern and contemporary art. The works of art amassed by Dirk Hannema (1895-1984), the former director of Museum Boymans in Rotterdam, form the basis of the museum collection. In 1957, he donated these to the Hannema-de Stuers Fundatie (Foundation). In the course of time, Hannema's collection blended with other collections, including that of the Province of Overijssel, and was also expanded with numerous new acquisitions. In this way, a particular constellation has arisen, a kaleidoscope of art, with work by J.M.W. Turner, Vincent van Gogh, Francis Picabia, Piet Mondrian, among others. In addition to a selection from the museum's own collection at both museum locations, temporary exhibitions are consistently on show, oriented to the general public as well as to specialist connoisseurs.Since 2005, collection and exhibitions have been shown at two locations: Kasteel het Nijenhuis near Heino/Wijhe, where Hannema lived until his death in 1984, and Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle.Kasteel het Nijenhuis is surrounded by an extensive sculpture garden; over 90 sculptures are exhibitedon 4.5 hectares of ornamental gardens, lawns and woodland. The museum in Zwolle was spectacularlyrenovated in 2012 /2013. The extension, a design of Hubert-Jan Henket, accommodates two exhibitionrooms and has a large oval window which offers a view of the historic inner city. On the outside thesuperstructure is clad with 55,000 white-blue tiles. Optically the expansion is lifted like a ceramic cloud, floating above the originally neo-classical building. Located where the medieval city centre borders onthe 19th century avenues, the renovated Museum is a present-day beacon as well as an icon for thefuture. Museum de Fundatie welcomes 250,000 to 300,000 visitors a year.
