Directed by four composers, Musiqa is a contemporary music group that takes a fresh look at the concert experience by blending dance, poetry, theatre, film and the visual arts with the finest modern repertoire. Musiqa's programs have been recognized by awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Aaron Copland Fund and the Argosy Foundation and have been featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." In 2013 and 2016, it received the prestigious Chamber Music America/ ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Now in its 16th season, Musiqa has been awarded a 2010 Chamber Music America commissioning grant: Composer Sebastian Currier and poet Sarah Manguso created a new work, Deep Sky Objects*, for soprano, piano quintet and electronics that premiered in September 2012.Musiqa now has one of the largest educational programs of any contemporary music ensemble in the United States: we've performed for over 50,000 public elementary school students since 2004, and 6,000 students were served in 2016-17 alone--all at no cost to schools.Musiqa's programs owe a great deal to our foundation, corporate and private sponsors and especially to the partnership with the Hobby Center, which subsidizes school bus transportation and donates many hall expenses.
