The Colby-Curtis Museum is a project of the Stanstead Historical Society which was established in 1929 at a meeting held in the century-old schoolhouse, Mansur School in Stanstead County. Today, the Society's vast collections are preserved at the Colby-Curtis Museum. The building, named Carrollcroft, is the former home of several generations of the Colby family. The imposing classic revival-style granite villa was built in 1859. The Colby family generously donated Carrollcroft, the adjacent barn and their contents to the Society, in 1992. Several members of the Colby family were historical figures and people of influence such as doctors, lawyers, politicians and philanthropists.Visitors will experience the elegant lifestyle enjoyed by several generations of the Colby's through the permanent exhibition. Temporary exhibitions give visitors a glimpse of many other aspects of the fascinating history of the Stanstead County area. The Colby-Curtis Museum is located in the heart of the town of Stanstead, in the beautiful Quebec Eastern Townships bordering the state of Vermont. The Society has an ideal place to permanently host its remarkable collections. It's aim is to preserve the cultural heritage of this border region.
