MyDIGITALtext is committed to the development of college-level critical thinking and writing skills in first- and second-year college students. We believe that "Writing is not the expression of thought; it is thought itself" so the development of critical thinking is inseparable from the development of writing skills. We believe writing is a challenging task for most students, and they will learn best when there are numerous writing assignments and a writing process that includes revising and resubmitting their work based on comments from a well-qualified and careful reviewer. We recognize the severe time pressures faced by most faculty, especially in the current economic climate that is increasing class sizes and teaching loads, and the need to resist the temptation toward multiple-choice assessments that reduce the study of the humanities and social sciences to rote memorization of machine-gradable answers. We also recognize the economic pressures faced by students and the fact that the cost of textbooks has risen at twice the rate of inflation for the past twenty years. MyDIGITALtext brings the focus back to college-level writing and critical thinking while saving students money and saving professors time. We do this by making fundamental changes in the role of the textbook and the instructor, especially with regard to delivering "content" and evaluating student assignments.
