Flowing a length of over 2,500 km from Gaumukh to Gangasagar, Ganga is considered to be the most revered river, and symbolizes the rich socio-cultural, spiritual and ecological heritage of India. Considering its cultural significance Government of India has launched Rs 20000 Cr flagship programme – Namami Gange for the holistic rejuvenation of River Ganga and its tributaries.National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), an authority under the Environment Protection Act 1986, is implementing the Namami Gange programme, India's largest environmental effort in the history of river rejuvenation. NMCG adopts an integrated and multi-sectoral approach for the protection, conservation, and rejuvenation of River Ganga and its tributaries.Basin approach has been adopted to restore the wholesomeness of River Ganga, by undertaking various activities such as pollution abatement, conservation of biodiversity, afforestation, wetland conservation, organic farming, small river rejuvenation, groundwater management, GIS mapping, real time water quality monitoring etc. NMCG has also notified Environmental Flows(E-Flow) for the main stem of river Ganga.To achieve the twin objective of continuous flow (Aviral Dhara) and Unpolluted flow (Nirmal Dhara) NMCG collaborates with various institutions of national and international repute such as IITs, NIUA, World Bank, GIZ, WRI, WII, CSE, INTACH, UNEP, and others. NMCG also undertakes many public outreach & people centric activities (Jan Ganga) and facilitate diversified research, scientific mapping and evidence-based policy making (Gyan Ganga).NMCG is headed by a Director General, an Additional Secretary level officer to Government of India. DG, NMCG is assisted by a Deputy Director General and 4 Executive Directors - all Joint Secretary level officers for effective decision making. NMCG has more than 100 professionals in various sectors working on a mission mode to achieve the objective of rejuvenation of river Ganga.
