Nation19 is a magazine that blends hip-hop culture, photojournalism, activism, and anthropology. The printed and digital magazine is produced and published by multimedia activists, visual anthropologist, film directors Queen Muhammad Ali and Hakeem Khaaliq. The magazine was started in the winter of 2010. Nation19 also produces documentary films and hosts exhibits based on various of its articles. Nation19 is defined by its large photo spreads and motifs of indigenous empowerment, archeological research, and social change. Nation19 offers posters, limited T-shirts, and accessories for purchase in its online store.The hashtag initialism term "APDTA" was coined by Nation19 and is an international trademarked brand sold by the company.From living on remote islands in the South Pacific to research Anthropophagy (the study of cannibalism) to working with poor Mayan coffee farmers and now producing the untold history of blacks in Mexico, Hakeem and Queen are pioneering a new style of documentary filmmaking, using immersive storytelling to raise awareness and inspire action for pressing global issues. Their work has raised awareness about hip-hop advocacy and historic inaccuracies affecting indigenous and black communities. They have a unique method of tracking these issues with a fresh, youthful approach. Hakeem and Queen have directed films in 7 countries, taught at several universities including ASU, UofA, Wayne State University and Confucius Institute in Beijing, China. They have appeared on CNN, BET, MTV and Univision. Their work has been featured in publications including Huffington Post, Ebony Magazine, LA Weekly and the Associated Press.
