National Express Rail GmbH, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Cologne, is part of the British National Express Group PLC (NX Group). In Germany, National Express currently employs around 450 people. Since the start of operations on December 13, 2015, National Express has operated the two lines RE 7 and RB 48 in North Rhine-Westphalia. In June 2019, line RE 5 (RRX) was taken over as part of the RRX preliminary operation, followed by line RE 6 (RRX) in December 2019. Since December 2020, line RE 4 will also supplement the operating network. Since the start of operations on December 13, 2015, National Express Rail GmbH has been operating the RE 7 (Rhein-Münsterland-Express) and the RB 48 (Rhein-Wupper-Bahn) in North Rhine-Westphalia, carrying around 20 million passengers per year. In addition, National Express won the tender for the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) with the lines RE 4, RE 5 (RRX) and RE 6 (RRX) in 2015 and is thus part of the major rail infrastructure project of the state of NRW. As a German rail transport company, National Express Rail GmbH is the only private company in the local rail transport sector in North Rhine-Westphalia.
