The National Institute for Public Safety Research and Training began informally in 2006 and officially as the Institute for Research in Emergency Management for Higher Education (IREMHE) in August 2008. Former URI President Robert L. Carothers and Vice President Robert A. Weygand had the foresight to predict that emergency management (EM), already a growing field, would become particularly specialized for higher education. Adding to resources already at URI and at other partner institutions and nonprofit organizations, the Institute established itself as a leader in training and research related to emergency management, public safety, emergency medical services, and law enforcement. With the merger of related efforts at the Campus Police Training Institute and elsewhere, the Institute has come to offer a broad array of services to the community. The Institute has been awarded multiple concurrent federal grants to support its efforts.
