The institute was established in April 2009 after the successful demonstration of Bio-remediation Garden. NIB was formerly known as "Institute of Eco-toxicology, Bio-remediation and Integrated Farming" (IEB & IF). Eco-toxicology and Integrated Sanitation & Farming System (ISFS) are integral components of the National Institute of Bio-remediation. The institute works for the use of biological process to remove contaminants from the environment. Decontamination through biological agents such as microbes, plants, biological engineering and fungi are the main components. Therefore bio-remediation technologies seek to catalyze this natural decontamination process by stimulating the remedial activity of various organisms. Integrated Sanitation & Farming System is a broad-based and holistic approach that has many applications to all aspects of life. It has close connectivity with the biological solutions of used-organic liquids and solid matters recovery for enhancing soil fertility.
